Description

Horley, Surrey born goalkeeper Edwin “Teddy” Bateup played for Croydon Glenrose, in Army football for The 7th Dragoon Guards, and for Faversham before joining Arsenal in 1905 where he was understudy to Jimmy Ashcroft, making his Football League debut at Manchester City in AprilĀ 1906 and playing 6 matches over the next two years before joining Southern League New Brompton (now Gillingham) in 1908. He returned to Arsenal in 1910 taking over the gloves from Ashcroft who had joined Blackburn Rovers and playing 30 times for The Gunners before movingĀ to Burslem Port Vale in August 1911.

Bateup kept a clean sheet on his debut at the Athletic Ground, in a 1-0 win over Oldham Athletic Reserves in a Central League match on 4th September 1911. He remained the club’s first choice keeper until September 1916, making 153 Central League and FA Cup appearances, helping them to win the Staffordshire Senior Cup, Birmingham Senior Cup and North Staffordshire Infirmary Cup on the way. After two years as a back-up keeper he retired from the game in 1918. He had kept goal for Vale on 193 occasions all told, including holding the gloves in their FA Cup First Round tie against Bolton Wanderers on 10th January 1914.
