Galston, Lanarkshire born inside forward (he played either side) Jock Batten’s early career is uncertain but he signed for First Division club Bradford Park Avenue in December 1920 and made his Football League debut a few days later in a defeat at Chelsea. Batten was a regular in Bradford’s line up for the remainder of the season but despite 5 goals including a brace in a win over Middlesbrough, he couldn’t help prevent their relegation at the season end. The following season he scored once in 15 appearances as The Avenue suffered their second successive relegation, and although he stayed at the club he only played once more in September 1922 before being released after 6 goals in 35 appearances for Bradford.
Batten joined Exeter City on a free transfer in the summer of 1923, and made his Grecians debut in a 3-1 defeat at Newport County on the opening day of the season on 25th August. His one and only goal for City came two matches later when he was on target in the return meeting with Newport as Exeter won 5-0. He continued to play and score for the reserves throughout the season. After a promising start to his St James’ Park career, he lost his place in the side and by the end of the season was allowed to move on, signing for Kidderminster Harriers after 10 appearances. He joined Castleford Town in 1925 and subsequently played for Poole in 1926 before his eventual retirement.
