Clay Cross, Derbyshire born right back George Beeson played junior football for Clay Cross in 1925 and North Wingfield Rangers in 1926 before joining Third Division (North) Chesterfield in the summer of 1927, making his Football League debut against Wigan Borough that November, becoming a first team regular from March 1928. In two seasons at Saltergate he made 46 appearances for The Spireites before being signed by League Champions Sheffield Wednesday in March 1929, playing twice before the end of the season that saw Wednesday retain their League Championship.
Initially he struggled to break into The Owls’ first eleven an made only 4 further appearances in 1930-31 and only 11 in 1931-32 before breaking into the Wednesday team on a more regular basis from mid September 1932, as they finished third in each of his first three full seasons at Hillsborough. Such was his form he was selected to represent The Football League against The Irish League in a 4-0 win at Deepdale, Preston in October 1933.
He stayed a further season at Hillsborough before joining Aston Villa in a swap deal with Joe Nibloe “and a big fee” going in the other direction in the 1934 close season after 75 appearances for The Owls, and at Villa he was a near ever present in 1934-35, missing only two matches, and was again selected for The Football League, playing against The Irish League in a 1-2 defeat at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool in September 1935.
However Aston Villa suffered relegation in 1935-36, and Beeson stayed another season at Villa Park in the Second Division before joining Walsall in the summer of 1937 after 71 appearances for Aston Villa. He scored his only career goal playing for Walsall in a 6-3 win over Cardiff City in May 1939 and played one further match at the start of the 1939-40 season, however his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 after 40 appearances for The Saddlers.
