He joined West Ham United in the 1937 close season, and was called up for first team duty in April 1939, when he scored in a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Upton Park. The same month he joined the Essex Regiment Territorial Army and during the Second World War he saw action with The Royal Artillery.
