Tannochside, Lanarkshire born centre forward Johnnie Bell began his football career at Glasgow Ashfield in 1912 and joined Heart of Midlothian in 1915, making his Scottish League debut against Third Lanark in February 1916, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory. He scored once more in 6 further matches before the end of the season before joining Third Lanark, where he played 5 matches during 1916-17 between his service in the Army during the First World War, also featuring in 7 wartime matches for West Ham United between March 1918 and April 1919, scoring once.

After the War he joined Dundee in 1919, where for two seasons he was their top goalscorer with 28 and 25 goals respectively in 1919-20 and 1920-21. He joined Albion Rovers in a player exchange for George Greenshields in July 1922 after 57 goals in 87 appearances for The Dark Blues but his spell with The Wee Rovers was relatively brief, scoring once in 9 appearances before joining Hamilton Academical in February 1923, where he played 2 matches before the season end.

He travelled south in July 1923 to join Newport County, making his Football League debut against Exeter City the next month, scoring 9 goals in 22 appearances during a single season with The Ironsides. He transferred to Watford in July 1924 where he also played at inside right, but a broken toe hampered his spell at Vicarage Road, where he scored 6 times in 21 appearances over two seasons before returning to Scotland to join Arbroath, where he subsequently finished his career in the summer of 1927 having scored 4 goals in 6 appearances for The Red Lichties during 1926-27.
