Clowne, near Bolsover, Derbyshire born goalkeeper Alfred Bennett began his football career with Clowne Rising Star in 1919 and joined Second Division Nottingham Forest in August 1920, making his Football League debut that December against Barnsley, then playing most of the remaining matches that season. Although displaced by the legendary England international veteran Sam Hardy he continued to feature playing 10 games in their Second Division Championship season of 1921-22 and regaining his place from Hardy during their relegation season of 1924-25 when he played 33 matches.
However after 2 games of the new season he was dropped in August 1925 and never played again for Forest after 89 appearances, spending two seasons in the reserves. He moved to Port Vale in May 1927 and played 36 matches for them over the next two seasons before joining non league Wellington St George’s in 1929 where he played until hanging up his gloves.
