Summerhill, Wrexham born right half Ray Bennion joined First Division Manchester United in 1921 from local Wrexham side Crichton’s Athletic, whom he had joined after the First World War in 1919 and with whom he won the Cheshire County Challenge Cup, making his Football League debut at Everton in August 1921. He played 17 times as United were promoted as Second Division runners-up in 1924-25, and after their relegation in 1931 he stayed a further season in the Second Division but lost his place in April 1932. In eleven seasons at Old Trafford he scored 3 times in 301 appearances.
He joined Burnley in November 1932 appearing 35 times for The Clarets, but having lost his place in November 1933 he played only once more before his retirement from playing in 1934. He was capped 10 times for Wales, making his debut for them in a 3-0 defeat against Scotland at Ninian Park on 31st October 1925 and winning his last cap against Ireland in a 4-0 defeat at Windsor Park, Belfast in December 1931. He later became a coach at Burnley after his retirement.
