Wing half Billy Benton had played Midland League football for hometown club Walsall but lost four seasons of football due to World War One, after which he played for Walsall again before signing for Blackpool in July 1920 making his Tangerines debut the following month against Bristol City. He notably scored a hat-trick in his 3rd appearance against Coventry City.He had a successful career and played for Blackpool throughout the 1920’s becoming club captain in the Second Division, however he only managed 9 appearances when they won the Second Division Championship in 1929-30. He then played a season in the First Division but lost his place in February 1931 and joined Fleetwood that summer after 23 goals in 370 games. A year later he came back to League football signing for Rochdale in July 1932 and was an ever present in 1932-33, after 8 goals in 50 games for Dale and aged 38 he went non league once again later in 1933 with Rossendale United and subsequently played for Nelson in 1935.
