Govan, Glasgow born inside or outside left George Bertram began his football career with Petershill and Dreghorn Juniors, signing for Scottish First Division club Airdrieonians in 1927. Mainly employed at inside left, he became an increasingly important member of the team (although collectively they were unable to match the standards of success at Airdrie set earlier in the 1920’s), moving to outside left after the departure of Jimmy Somerville in 1930.
In the 1931-32 campaign his contribution was 41 League and Cup appearances (including the semi-final loss to Kilmarnock) and seven goals, plus a selection for The Scottish League against The Irish League in Belfast in October 1931, but he played only six times in the following campaign before his career was halted by a broken leg, and he was released by Airdrie before its end.
Short spells with few appearances followed in 1933 at top-tier sides Hamilton Academical (3 matches), Partick Thistle (1 match) and in 1934-35 a single goal in 6 matches with Queen of the South, then spending 1935-36 at Second Division club King’s Park, where he featured slightly more often, scoring once in 16 appearances, before he then dropped out of senior football aged 28.
