Pensnett, Staffordshire born goalkeeper Fred Biddlestone played for Hickman’s Park Rangers, Moxley Wesleyans, Wednesbury Town and Bloxwich Strollers before joining Third Division (South) club Walsall in 1929, making his Football League debut at Gillingham that August. He played 24 games for Walsall before he was signed by First Division club Aston Villa in February 1930, making his Villa debut in a home defeat to Burnley days later, playing with them throughout the 1930’s, when he also had the likes of Ben Olney, Tommy Jackson and Harry Mort vying for the goalkeeper’s gloves.
As a result he didn’t appear for Aston Villa for four years between November 1931 and October 1935, but from Christmas Day 1935 he reclaimed the number one slot, making 160 appearances before joining Mansfield Town in the close season of 1939, for whom he made 3 appearances at the start of the next season before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 finished his career.
NB in the photograph Biddlestone claims the ball challenging with Arsenal striker Ted Drake. Drake scored Arsenal’s goal in a 1-0 victory at Highbury on 18th April 1936.
