Poplar, London born wing half James Bigden played for Old St Luke’s in 1893 and for Thames Ironworks, the forerunner of West Ham United, before joining Southern League Gravesend United in 1898, and thereafter he re-joined West Ham United for whom he made his debut in an FA Cup tie against New Brompton in November 1899. Over four seasons with The Irons he scored 3 goals in 109 appearances for West Ham United, with over 100 coming in the Southern League, before joining First Division Woolwich Arsenal in June 1904.
He made his Football League debut at Newcastle United that September, and in four seasons at The Manor Ground he was twice a losing FA Cup semi finalist in 1906 and 1907, and he joined Bury in June 1908 after a single goal, scored in a win at Bristol City in October 1906, in 87 appearances for The Gunners. However he played only 3 times for Bury that autumn before joining Southern League Southend United in 1909 before his eventual retirement after 4 matches for The Shrimpers.
