Cowling, Yorkshire born goalkeeper Cliff Binns joined Third Division (North) club Halifax Town in 1928 having played for Knott United and Portsmouth Rovers and made his Football League debut at Wrexham in May 1928, appearing 35 times for The Shaymen before joining First Division Blackburn Rovers in March 1930. He was ever present for Rovers during 1930-31 and was their principal glovesman for six seasons until moving to Second Division Barnsley in the close season of 1936 after Blackburn’s relegation, having made 196 appearances for Rovers.
He played for Barnsley until the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, and after their relegation in 1938 he helped them win the Third Division (North) Championship in 1938-39 missing only 3 matches during the campaign, making 104 appearances in total for The Tykes, and after the War he joined Carlisle United during the 1945-46 season and played for Gainsborough Trinity in 1946 before his eventual retirement.
