Description

Lochee, near Dundee born right back Jimmy Bissett started his football career with Forthill Athletic in 1913 joining Alloa Athletic in 1914 from where he moved to Dundee in 1919. He moved to England in early 1920 to sign for Football League First Division club Everton for a £250 fee. At the end of the season he was transfer-listed at the same valuation, but by October, when the player applied to have the fee reduced, the directors decided to invite offers and joined Welsh League Ebbw Vale before moving to Southend United on a free transfer in May 1922, for whom he made his Football League debut in August 1922 in a 2-0 win at Newport County. According to the Daily Express, “[his] work left nothing to be desired”.

His single season with The Shrimpers saw him play 37 games before a move to Rochdale in May 1923. Again he only stayed a single season where he was an ever present scoring 3 penalties in 44 matches as Rochdale finished runners up in the Third Division (North), before being signed by Second Division Middlesbrough, who had just been relegated.

He was a regular selection until the end of January 1925, but next appeared for the first team more than a year later, playing the last nine matches of the 1925-26 season. He played 33 times for ‘Boro before joining Lincoln City for what the Express called “a substantial fee” in July 1926, where he scored 6 goals in 33 appearances through to August 1927.

He returned to Scotland where he joined Dundee, becoming their manager in 1928, a position he held until 1933, when he joined Raith Rovers. He later became Barrow’s manager between April and end December 1937.
