Description

Garstang, Lancashire born outside right Dicky Bond began his football career in the Army with The Royal Field Artillery in 1901. Bond signed for Preston North End in August 1902, making his debut in an FA Cup tie at Bishop Auckland in December 1902. He soon became a regular member of their first eleven, being part of the team which won the Second Division Championship in 1904. He scored a career best 17 goals for Preston in 1905-06 as they finished runners up to Liverpool in the League Championship.

In February 1905 he won the first of his England caps in a 1-1 draw against Ireland at Ayresome Park, the team against whom he scored both his England goals a year later in a 5-0 win at The Solitude, Belfast. After winning 5 caps in 1905 and 1906 he was recalled in 1910 when a Bradford City player, playing all three home internationals in the spring of 1910. He also represented The Football League once.

In May 1909, after 38 goals in 164 games, he was sold to Bradford City for £950, then a Preston record fee, and he continued to play for The Bantams  during arguably the most successful period in the club’s history although he was unfortunately suspended for Bradford’s 1911 FA Cup Final victory over Newcastle United for using ‘improper language’ towards the crowd during a game at Arsenal, until their relegation from the First Division in 1922.

By then despite the interruption of the First World War, during which he was taken Prisoner of War at the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 when fighting with The 18th (Service) Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment (The Bradford Pals), and imprisoned for two years, he was not only Club Captain but had amassed 72 goals in 333 appearances for The Bantams, Signed by Blackburn Rovers for £450 in May 1922, he played a single season for them in 1922-23 making 26 appearances and scoring 3 goals before playing in non league football for Lancaster Town, joining them in August 1923, and playing for Garstang in 1926-27 before his retirement.
