Description

Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire born goalkeeper Jimmy Branston had been on the books of Grimsby Town in 1913-14 without making a first team appearance, and joined Sutton Junction in 1914 just prior to the First World War, but after the War he joined Second Division Rotherham County in the 1919 close season, making his Football League debut against Nottingham Forest in August 1919, a season in which he was ever present, missing only one match before, having clearly impressed as no less than First Division Preston North End, he signed for The Lambs in March 1922 after 115 appearances for The Millers.

He went straight into their team to face Manchester City the following Saturday and was again ever present in his first full season at Deepdale, after which he shared the gloves with George Prout for a further two seasons. After their relegation in 1925 Branston reclaimed the number one position in 1925-26, he eventually lost his place to Tony Carr in September 1926 after 136 appearances for North End, and retired subsequently from professional football, already well into his 30’s.
