Description

Inside forward George Briggs was born in Wombwell, near Barnsley, and started his youth career, whilst a coal miner, with Mitchell’s Main Colliery and then Ardsley Athletic before moving to nearby Denaby United in 1920. In December 1923 Briggs signed for First Division Birmingham City, making his Football League debut against Nottingham Forest in January 1924, breaking through into the team in December 1924 and missing relatively few games thereafter. At Birmingham he made 324 appearances in almost a decade, scoring 107 goals. He also picked up a runners-up medal playing for the Blues in their 1931 FA Cup Final defeat to local rivals West Bromwich Albion at Wembley Stadium.

He was twice selected for the England squad being a non playing reserve first against Ireland at Anfield in October 1926, and then against Scotland at Wembley in April 1928 in the “Wembley Wizards” match, but he never won an England cap.

He joined Second Division Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 1933, having just turned 30, and enjoyed three seasons in green before retiring from the professional game after 14 goals in 62 appearances for The Pilgrims. He played briefly for St Austell in the 1936-37 season before his playing retirement.
