Description

Mickleover, Derbyshire born outside left Enos Bromage began his football career after the end of the First World War with London Road Congregationals and played for Burton All Saints in 1920 and Stapleford Town in 1921 before spending 1922-23 on the books of Sheffield United, without making their first eleven. In August 1923 he signed for Second Division Derby County, making his Football League debut against Port Vale in April 1924, scoring in a 2-0 victory, but over three seasons at The Baseball Ground his first team opportunities were very limited, and by the time he joined Gillingham in May 1927 he had played only 6 first team games, scoring three times.

He soon became a regular in Gillingham’s first team and had yet to play a full season at Priestfield when he he was signed by Second Division West Bromwich Albion in March 1928 after 6 goals in 22 appearances for The Gills, but having scored twice in 10 appearances for The Baggies before the season end he spent 1929-30 in their reserves before joining Nottingham Forest in October 1929. His only appearance for Forest came in a 2-0 defeat to former club West Brom a few days later, and he was released in early 1930, joining Cheshire County League club Chester for a brief spell, soon moving on to Birmingham & District League club Wellington Town (now Telford United) in the 1930 close season, where he played until his eventual retirement.

There are a number of Bromage family footballers with Derby County connections. Enos Bromage was the youngest of four footballing brothers.His eldest brother Harry Bromage was a goalkeeper who played for Derby County, Burton United, Doncaster Rovers and Leeds City. Billy Bromage played outside left for Derby County reserves, Gainsborough Trinity, Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers and later coached Derby County where Billy’s son Sidney Bromage played for the reserves in the mid 1930’s, as well as for Sheffield United reserves. A further elder brother, George Bromage, also had five years’ professional experience as an outside left. While his total League appearances were just five, with Sheffield United between 1923 and 1924, he also was on the books of Derby County, Doncaster Rovers and Buxton.

Also related were his uncle Enos Bromage (Sr) who played most of his career with Derby Junction, but did played 17 League games for Derby County in the early 1890’s, and probably George Edward Bromage was a cousin, he played three games with Doncaster Rovers as a goalkeeper in 1925 but had already played with Bentley Colliery and Barnsley, but not at senior level, and later saw service with Frickley Colliery and Scunthorpe United.
