Description

Dundee born centre forward David Brown started his football career with Dundee St Joseph’s in 1909 before joining hometown club Dundee a year later. Spells at Morton in 1911 and Peebles Rovers in 1913 prefaced a return to Dundee later that year. In 1917 during the First World War, during which he played wartime football for Stoke, he joined Glasgow Rangers, making a scoring debut in a 3-0 win over Celtic in a Glasgow Cup tie in September 1917, scoring 21 goals in 27 appearances between September 1917 and March 1919.

In October 1919 he signed for Stoke, making his Football League debut at Rotherham County in November, scoring twice in a 3-1 victory. His two seasons at the Victoria Ground produced 17 goals in 52 appearances before a move to Notts County in July 1921, where he scored 7 times in 14 appearances in his single season at Meadow Lane.

He moved back to Scotland and joined Kilmarnock in 1922 before returning to England with Darlington in August 1923, where he rattled in 27 goals in 1923-24 and 40 goals, an English League record at the time, as Darlington won the 1924-25 Third Division (North) Championship, he was of course the club’s top scorer both seasons. In his first season at Feethams he scored all four goals in a win at Tranmere Rovers in November 1923 and hat-tricks against Walsall and New Brighton, trebles followed in his second against Crewe Alexandra, Wrexham and Barrow.

He then helped Darlington stay in the Second Division before he joined Crewe Alexandra in June 1926 after 77 goals in 107 appearances for the Feethams club, and he once again top scored for Crewe with 23 goals in 40 appearances in 1926-27. He finally moved to Barrow in July 1927 scoring 7 times in 24 appearances before his retirement in 1928.
