Sunderland born inside right Walter Bruce began his football career with Southwick St Columba’s in 1930 and played for Silksworth Colliery in 1931 before signing for North Eastern League club Workington in 1932. His form there attracted the attentions of Second Division club Bradford City, who signed him in 1933, his Football League debut coming at Burnley in March 1934, his only first team appearance of his debut season.
He broke into The Bantams’ first eleven from April 1935 but lost his place during their relegation season in March 1937, and played only 7 more matches in 1937-38 before joining Swansea Town in the 1938 close season. After a single goal in 13 appearances for The Swans he was signed by West Ham United in the summer of 1939 but hadn’t played for the club before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 effectively finished his career.
