Description

Morpeth, Northumberland born left half Jim Bumphrey began his football career with Bedlington United in 1906 and played for Ashington Alliance in 1907 before being signed by Second Division Birmingham in 1908, making his Football League debut at Burnley in January 1909. Initially appearing irregularly in the Birmingham first team during his first three seasons at St Andrews, he broke into the first eleven on a regular basis from March 1911 and missed only 4 games as Birmingham narrowly missed out on promotion in 1912-13, finishing third.

However his career was effectively finished by the onset of the First World War, by when he had scored 7 goals in 142 appearances for The Blues, and he played for Durham City in 1915 before serving during the War in the Royal Navy with the rank of Stoker First Class on the ships HMS Victory, HMS Gibraltar and HMS Victory II. After the War he did not resume his football career.
