Description

Stockport, Cheshire born right back Frank “Bronco” Burton started his football career with Kilburn before signing for Southern League club Queens Park Rangers in 1910. He moved to fellow Southern League club West Ham United in July 1912 and played 125 games for them (ex Wartime football), scoring 6 goals, including 64 matches in The Football League after West Ham joined the Football League as a Second Division club in 1919. His career was interrupted by the First World War during which he served in The Royal Fusiliers Sportsman’s Battalion, where he suffered several injuries fighting at The Somme, Ypres, and Cambrai. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Despite this, he also turned out for West Ham in 40 wartime league matches.

In May 1921 he joined Charlton Athletic where he played 107 matches over four seasons, missing only 4 matches in their 1922-23 campaign, going on to play for Kent League club Grays Thurrock United in 1925 before his eventual retirement. There is a street named after him, Frank Burton Close, near to The Valley where he played for Charlton. In 1927-28 he was the manager of Real Oviedo in Spain.
