Calton, Glasgow born inside forward James Cairney began his football career with Glasgow junior club St Anthony’s and signed for joined Scottish League Glasgow Celtic in September 1922, making his League debut in a 4-3 victory over Partick Thistle at Parkhead on 7th October 1922. He went on to make two further League appearances that season for The Bhoys in a 0-0 draw with Clyde and a 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen and also played in the opening round of their Scottish Cup campaign against Lochgelly United, in a 3-2 victory for Celtic, as they went on to lift the Cup at the season end beating Hibernian in the Final.
Cairney was replaced in the following game after the Lochgelly cup tie by a certain Jimmy McGrory who was making his Celtic debut, and the rest as they say, is history. After a loan spell at Arbroath he eventually signed for Arthurlie in August 1923 before moving to the the nascent United States soccer leagues the following year where he went on to play for Boston.
