Busby, Renfrewshire born full back James Calderwood played for Manchester Calico Printers in 1921 before joining First Division Manchester City for whom he made his Football League debut against Everton on Boxing Day 1922. He was only an occasional inclusion in the City team over the next 4 seasons and made 37 appearances before joining Grimsby Town, the last two coming in the FA Cup 3rd round, a replayed victory over The Corinthians in a run that would see City beaten in the Final by Bolton Wanderers. At Grimsby he played for 3 seasons, helping them to promotion to the First Division for the first time in the club’s history as runners up in the Second Division in 1928-29 when he played 33 times during the campaign, but his last game came against Everton in December 1929 in a First Division match, and (probably through injury) he retired from football after 76 appearances for The Mariners.
NB in the photograph Calderwood sits on the right with Manchester City teammate Jimmy Elwood.
