In September 1937 he made the first of 5 representative appearances before the War for The Scottish League, playing in a 3-2 victory over The Irish League at The Oval, Belfast, and he received the first of 3 full international caps for Scotland in a 3-1 win against The Netherlands at The Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam in May 1938, also playing in October 1938 against Ireland and finally in a 2-1 defeat against England at Hampden Park in April 1939.
