Loganlea, West Lothian born outside right Alex Carruthers joined Heart of Midlothian in 1934 and made his Scottish League debut in a 2-0 defeat at Hamilton Academical in April 1935, his only League appearance for Hearts before joining Falkirk that summer. His spell at Brockville Park was far more successful, and attracted First Division Bolton Wanderers to sign him in February 1937, with Carruthers making his Football League debut against Liverpool the same month, although it proved his only appearance of the season. In 1937-38 he scored 5 goals in a further 26 appearances for The Trotters before returning to Falkirk in 1938, playing for them during the Second World War. After the War he returned to England, joining Rochdale in May 1946, spending a single season at Spotland where he scored 6 goals in 16 appearances. He then joined non league Rossendale United in 1947 where he finished his career.
