Rotherham, Yorkshire born (normally right sided) wing half or inside forward William Chambers joined Second Division club Rotherham County his hometown club from Mexborough in 1919, having played for Mexborough after the end of the First World War, making his Football League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1920, one of three matches in his debut season. Over five seasons at Millmoor, with a one season break in 1923-24 when he joined local Midland League club Denaby United for the season before returning to Millmoor the following summer, he made 108 appearances for The Millers, scoring 9 goals in 108 matches during a period where they generally were struggling to make headway in Division Three (North). He never played for another League club, playing his last match in April 1925. He then joined Torquay United, not yet a Football League club, in 1925, his final recorded club before his eventual retirement.
