Dundee born left back Alec Chaplin signed for Dundee Hibernian in 1914 and played 24 games for them in 1914-15 before volunteering for military service. After World War One Dundee still held his registration although he never played for them again, which was released in April 1919, whereafter he signed for Second Division Fulham. He made his Football League debut against South Shields in August 1919, and spent 7 seasons at Craven Cottage. missing only 8 games in his first four seasons, playing 276 times and scoring once for The Cottagers in a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City in March 1924, before moving to non league Northfleet and retiring from the professional game in 1926.
His brothers Jack, who played for Dundee, Tottenham and Manchester City and later managed Huddersfield Town, and George Chaplin, who played for Bradford City, Coventry City and Scotland, were both professional footballers.
NB Although this image was issued in 1920 when Chaplin was at Fulham, it clearly shows him wearing a Dundee Hibernian (now Dundee United) shirt, and it’s therefore almost certain that this image was taken in 1914 when he joined them.
