Description

Born in Christchurch, Dorset, Percy Cherrett was a centre forward who proved a considerable asset to every club he played for. He started his career with local non league Boscombe in 1919 before moving to Portsmouth in March 1921, scoring a brace on his Football League debut against Norwich City four days later, and 5 goals in his first 3 games, where he hit 36 goals in a 70 game two year spell, with a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Gillingham in October 1921. He top scored with 22 goals as Pompey finished third in the Third Division (South) in 1921-22.

He signed for Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 1923 and made his debut for Argyle by continuing his Fratton Park scoring habit, hitting Argyle’s only goal in a defeat at Portsmouth, and went on to maintain his one-in-two scoring prowess with a near identical record whilst with The Pilgrims, also hitting 36 but in 8 fewer games than  with Pompey, including 5 braces in a row in games during December 1923, as Argyle finished runners up in the Third Division (South) both seasons Cherrett played for them.

He left Argyle when Jack Cock arrived in 1925, joining Crystal Palace in September, where he hit an impressive 65 goals in 81 games over two seasons, including a hat-trick in his third game in a 4-0 win against Watford and 4 goals in a 7-1 thrashing of Norwich City in October 1926, before spells with Bristol City in the Second Division in 1927-28 (15 goals in 26 games), finishing off closer to home with Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1928-29 (21 goals in 43 appearances), saw him move to non league Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1929 having bagged 173 career goals in 282 games.
