Description

Glasgow born centre half Jimmy Clark began his football career with Clydebank Juniors in 1932, before, having been discovered by manager John Cochrane, he joined First Division Sunderland in 1933, making his Football League debut at Derby County in February 1935. Clark played 50 matches during his spell at Roker Park, winning a League Championship medal in the 1935-36 season when he played 28 League games during the campaign, but he missed out on selection for the 1937 FA Cup Final.

Clark left Wearside to continue his career, joining Second Division Plymouth Argyle in the 1937 close season, but his career with Argyle was cut short when he joined the RAF in 1939 to serve his country after the outbreak of the Second World War after 39 appearances. However, he still managed 16 appearances for the club in the 1939-40 South West Regional League. After the War he moved to South Africa and was believed to be involved in football management there in the 1960’s.

NB his grandfather also played for Sunderland in the 1890’s but he wasn’t of the same surname, so it’s not clear exactly which player was his grandfather!
