Sheffield born wing half Horace Clarke began his career with Shirebrook and had been on Sheffield Wednesday’s books immediately prior to the First World War without appearing for their first eleven, and during the War he played for Scunthorpe United whom he joined in 1918, before resuming peacetime football with a move to Second Division club Coventry City in the 1919 close season, making his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in August 1919 in what was Coventry’s inaugural League match. He made 17 appearances for Coventry, he then moved club each season to Merthyr Town (32 appearances and a goal in 1920-21), Chesterfield (4 goals in 37 games in 1921-22), and finally Exeter City (16 appearances in 1922-23) before returning to the Midland League with Mansfield Town in 1923.
