Description

Newcastle born outside left Tom Cochrane began his football career with Tyneside League St Peter’s Albion in 1927 and turned professional with Leeds United in August 1928, making his Football League debut in October 1928 against Manchester City. Although Leeds were relegated in 1931 he missed only one game as they were immediately promoted back to the First Division in 1932 as Second Division runners up. After 27 goals in 259 appearances for the Elland Road club he moved to Middlesbrough in October 1936 for £2,500 and had three good years there, highlighted by scoring four goals in the 6-1 rout of Manchester City at Maine Road in March 1938. He scored 16 goals in 81 games before leaving in May 1939 to join Bradford Park Avenue for £1,100, playing in the first 3 games of the abandoned 1939-40 season and continuing to play wartime football for various clubs including Bradford City, Darlington, Hartlepools United and Middlesbrough before his retirement after the 1944-45 season prior to the resumption of peacetime football.
