Sheffield born goalkeeper Arthur Cooper had been on the books at Birmingham prior to the outbreak of World War One without making their first eleven and on the resumption of peacetime football after the conflict he joined Second Division Barnsley in 1919, making his debut at Stoke in August 1919. He spent 3 seasons as Barnsley’s regular goalkeeper making 104 appearances, before moving to First Division Oldham Athletic in the summer of 1922 where he had a run of 9 games making his debut against Sheffield United end of November, playing through December and into the New Year in place of regular goalkeeper Howard Matthews. However Oldham were relegated at the end of the season and Cooper left the professional game thereafter.
