Description

Dunston-on-Tyne, Gateshead born left back Ernie Coquet played junior football for Seaham White Star in 1903 and Gateshead Town in 1904, before joining Sunderland in 1905. He left the club to join Southern League Reading in 1907 without having made a first team appearance. In March 1908 Coquet signed for Tottenham Hotspur, together with Billy Minter, in a combined £500 deal and made his debut in the Southern League, playing 6 games immediately before Tottenham moved up to League status. He was also a member of the Tottenham team that played the club’s inaugural Football League fixture, a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1908.

He helped Spurs to win promotion out of the Second Division with a runners up finish in 1908-09, one point behind Champions Bolton Wanderers. In his three seasons at White Hart Lane he scored once (a penalty in an FA Cup defeat to Burnley in February 1909) in 90 appearances. Coquet then moved onto the Central League club Port Vale in 1911, scoring five goals in 61 games and helping the club lift the Staffordshire Senior Cup in the process. He was sold to Second Division Fulham for a ‘substantial’ amount in January 1913 and played 49 times for The Cottagers before the onset of the First World War finished his League career. After the War he ended his career at Northern League club Leadgate Park.
