Description

Lower Darwen born full back Arthur Cowell started playing football for Blackburn St Peter’s in 1903 before joining Nelson in 1904. From Nelson he signed for Blackburn Rovers the following year making his Football League debut at Notts County in September 1905, starting a 32 year association with the Ewood Park club. He played both sides of World War One for Blackburn winning two League Championships with them in 1912 and 1914. He also won a single England cap playing in a 1-1 draw against Ireland at The Solitude Ground, Belfast in February 1910. He also played once for The Football League in an 8-1 win over The Irish League at Boundary Park, Oldham in October 1909.

During the First World War he played as a guest for Burnley. He made the last of 307 appearances for Rovers, never scoring, at Derby County in December 1919, before retiring and joining Blackburn’s coaching staff. He eventually left in May 1937 and took over as Wrexham’s trainer, becoming their manager in the summer of 1938 but he only stayed five months in the position leaving after only 7 games of the 1938-39 season.
