Description

Spondon, Derbyshire born right half Jack Cox joined junior club Spondon in 1888 and then played for Long Eaton Rangers in 1889, making his first senior appearance for them in an FA Cup tie against Wolves in January 1891. Shortly thereafter he signed for Football League club Derby County making his Football League debut at Sunderland in March 1891, and he played for The Rams throughout the 1890’s, helping them to finish as League runners up in 1895-96 and twice in third place in 1894 and 1897. Cox won his only England cap when playing in a 2-0 win over Ireland at Cliftonville Gardens, Belfast in March 1892.

In the FA Cup he played both seasons as they were losing semi finalists to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wellington Road, Perry Barr in 1896 and to Everton at The Victoria Ground, Stoke in 1897, before getting to both the 1898 and 1899 FA Cup Finals where they lost firstly 3-1 to Nottingham Forest in 1898 and then 4-1 to Sheffield United in 1899, both games being held at The Crystal Palace. He also played 3 unofficial international matches on the FA Tour of Germany and Austria in November 1899. He left Derby at the year end after 7 goals in 238 appearances and retired from professional football.
