Nuneaton, Warwickshire born left back Charlie Cross began his football career with Siddeley-Deasy during the First World War and after the War signed for Second Division club Coventry City in the summer of 1919, making his Football League debut at Fulham that October. However he remained very much on the fringes of the first eleven at Highfield Road, making only 13 appearances over three seasons before signing for fellow Second Division club Crystal Palace in the 1922 close season.
At Palace he became a regular immediately, and although they suffered relegation to the Third Division (South) in 1924-25, Cross stayed with them and was a near ever present, missing only one match, in their 1925-26 campaign. In the summer of 1928, after 237 appearances for Palace, he transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he only played 3 times for Wolves at the start of the 1928-29 season, joining Third Division (South) club Merthyr Town the following summer, where he played 17 matches before the year end (unusually at right back) before finishing his professional career.
