Stourport, Shropshire born goalkeeper Ted Crowe began his football career with Stourport Swifts in 1930, from where he joined First Division club West Bromwich Albion, where he was understudy to England international Harold Pearson. He made his Football League debut against Blackburn Rovers in January 1934 and made 11 appearances through to the end of March. The following season he deputised just once for Pearson in a 4-3 defeat to Arsenal at Highbury, and he had 4 further outings for The Baggies in Pearson’s absence in 1935-36 before leaving The Hawthorns to join Second Division club Swansea Town in 1936.
At Swansea he was understudy to Stan Moore and only appeared once for the first eleven keeping a clean sheet in a win over Bury in March 1937. He then moved to Third Division (South) club Aldershot where he appeared more regularly in 1937-38 with 18 of his 23 appearances for The Shots coming during the campaign. In 1939 he joined non league club Wilden before his eventual retirement.
NB in the photograph taken in the match at Highbury on 15th September 1934, Crowe is beaten by Arsenal’s Ted Drake for Arsenal’s third goal in their 4-3 win in front of a 40,000 crowd.
