Description

Bishop Middleham, County Durham born centre forward George Crowther began his football career with Sheldon Athletic in 1910 and spent 1911-12 on the books of Manchester United as an amateur, a status he retained until after the First World War, without making a first team appearance. In 1912 he joined Second Division Huddersfield Town. where he made his Football League debut at Lincoln City in November 1912, playing once more for The Terriers at home to Nottingham Forest the following week, however he left the Leeds Road club to join Rotherham Town in 1913, and played for Halifax Town in 1914 before moving to Hurst later the same year prior to the suspension of peacetime football with the onset of the War.

With the War over, he joined First Division Bradford Park Avenue in May 1919, and made 9 appearances for the club before signing for Second Division West Ham United in May 1920. He remained a fringe player at the lower level, making only 3 appearances for The Irons in September 1920 before returning to the north east to join newly elected League club Hartlepools United in July 1921. He didn’t break into the first team, however, until January 1922 and the following month he scored a hat-trick in a 7-0 thumping of Chesterfield and finished the season with 8 goals from 17 appearances for The Monkey Hangers. He had scored twice more in 9 further appearances during 1922-23 when he was signed by Tranmere Rovers in January 1923, scoring twice in 10 appearances for Rovers before losing his place in March 1923, after which he retired from senior football.
