Ryton on Tyne, County Durham born centre half Andy Curran had joined Sunderland from Mickley Colliery spending 1920-21 at Roker Park without making the first team. Released in the summer of 1921, he joined Second Division Blackpool making his Football League debut in September against Bury. He stayed six seasons at Bloomfield Road, scoring 3 goals in 108 appearances, before joining Accrington Stanley in March 1927. He played for Stanley until 1931, scoring 5 goals in 144 games before joining non league Lytham that summer.
His younger brother was Jimmy Curran, who played over 250 games for Barnsley, and also for Southend United.
