Description

Outside right Jimmy Curran was born at Ryton on Tyne, County Durham, the younger brother of Andy Curran of Blackpool and Accrington Stanley. He signed for Second Division Barnsley from Spen Black & White in 1921, making his Football League debut that December against Rotherham County. The following season he established himself in the team and in 1926-27 scored 22 goals in 42 games, his most prolific season, finishing as the club’s joint top scorer. His total included a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Blackpool in January 1927. Barnsley were relegated in his final season, 1931-32, and he was released at the end of the season after 73 goals in 256 games. He joined Southend United but only played twice for them, scoring in his second match in a 2-2 draw at Swindon Town in March 1933, which proved his farewell in professional football.
