Nottingham born inside forward George Dale began his football career with Newark Athletic in 1910 and played for the town’s Stanley Works team in 1911 and for Newark Town in 1912 before signing for First Division Notts County, for whom he made his Football League debut at Liverpool in September 1914. He scored 5 goals in 19 appearances for The Magpies in the final season before the onset of the First World War forced the abandonment of peacetime football, and having lost four seasons of his playing career to the conflict he joined Chelsea on the resumption in 1919.
He scored his only Chelsea goal in a 5-2 defeat at Aston Villa on Christmas Day 1919 and missed only 6 games as Chelsea finished third in the League Championship behind West Bromwich Albion, however he fell out of favour the following autumn and joined non league Weymouth in 1922 after 52 appearances for The Pensioners. He subsequently played for Vickers of Crayford in 1923 before retiring from the game.
