Aberdeen born centre half Dave Davidson began his football career with Garthdee and spent 1922-23 with Aberdeen Argyle before joining Scottish League Forfar Athletic in 1923. He was signed from The Loons by First Division Liverpool for £1,500 in July 1928, making his Football League debut against Bury that August, missing only 6 games in his debut season for The Reds. However he lost his place to Tom Bromilow in December 1929 and following the signing of Bury’s Tiny Bradshaw in January 1930 he was sold the same week to Newcastle United for £4,000 after having scored twice in 62 appearances for Liverpool.
Having taken time to establish himself in Newcastle’s first team, he was a near ever present in their 1931-32 campaign, missing only one League match and playing 9 times in their FA Cup run which saw them win the FA Cup, beating Arsenal 2-1 in the Final at Wembley. Davidson also played in their 1932 FA Charity Shield defeat to Everton that October, but by then he had lost his regular first team berth, becoming a fringe player although he played in more than half their fixtures in the 1935-36 campaign.
After 145 appearances for The Toon he joined Hartlepools United for £50 in June 1937, but made only six appearances for The Monkey Hangers that autumn before joining Gateshead in October. He scored twice in 15 appearances for Gateshead before retiring in 1938. After the Second World War he became manager of non league Whitley Bay in 1945, becoming the manager of Ashington in 1951, a position he continued to hold until the summer of 1963.
