Glasgow born outside left Willie Davidson began his football career with amateur club Queen’s Park, for whom he made his Scottish League debut against Morton in March 1904. He scored 9 goals in 22 matches for The Spiders over just over two seasons, before signing for Falkirk in May 1906, where he was described as “one of the most gentlemanly footballers of today, an artful player who never mars his game by doubtful tactics”, noteworthy for his “lightning left foot crosses”.
He helped Falkirk finish runners up in the Scottish League Championship in 1907-08 and 1909-10, and in 1909 he toured North America with The Pilgrims, but after 9 goals in 117 appearances for The Bairns, he signed for Airdrieonians in August 1910. But his spell at Broomfield was brief, scoring 3 goals in 14 appearances for The Diamonds before he was signed by First Division club Middlesbrough, making his Football League debut against Bradford City in December 1910. He played 19 matches for Middlesbrough before being signed by Everton in the summer of 1911.
Davidson scored 4 goals in 25 appearances during their 1911-12 campaign as Everton finished runners up in the League Championship, but managed only 16 more appearances for The Toffees in 1912-13 before returning to Scottish League football, joining St Mirren in June 1913. After 3 goals in 15 appearances for The Buddies, with just one match in 1914-15 to his name, he was released and finished with playing professionally.
