Description

Middlesbrough, Yorkshire born goalkeeper Ben Davies began his football career with Middlesbrough United in 1908 and joined Shildon Athletic in 1909 before signing for hometown First Division club Middlesbrough in 1910, making his Football League debut against Oldham Athletic in February 1911. With Tim Williamson absolutely established between the sticks at ‘Boro opportunities were extremely limited although he played 27 of his 31 Middlesbrough matches in the last two seasons of peacetime football before the onset of the First World War forced its abandonment in May 1915.

After the War he joined Cardiff City, initially in the Southern League but from 1920 in the newly expanded Football League, and he played 19 games as they were promoted to the First Division in their first League season. After beginning the season as second choice to Herbert Kneeshaw, he came into the team in January 1921, and Davies was in goal for the 1921 FA Cup semi final which Cardiff lost in a replay to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford. After their promotion, he played two more seasons in the First Division but lost his place to Tom Farquharson before moving to Leicester City in 1923 after 89 appearances for The Bluebirds. However he only played 3 matches at Leicester in 1923-24, then none having moved to Bradford Park Avenue the following season, before retiring in 1924.
