Marsden, County Durham born full back Sam Davis began his football career with Whitburn Colliery from where he was signed by Second Division club Stoke in 1923, making his Football League debut against South Shields in March 1924, playing in the return in the North East a week later, these two matches proving his only first team appearances for Stoke, on both occasions playing at left back. He stayed another season in the reserves before a move to Tranmere Rovers in the 1925 close season, and played 5 matches at right back in the early stages of the 1925-26 season, before joining Accrington Stanley the following summer. He played twice for Stanley before the end of August 1926 before returning to the North East to play for Spennymoor United in 1927 after an unsuccessful trial at Darlington.
NB although the image was published by the time Davis had joined Tranmere Rovers in 1925, it clearly shows him in the stripes of Stoke.
