Mexborough, Yorkshire born right back Sidney Dawson had been on Sheffield Wednesday’s books in 1912-13 having joined them from Denaby United, but he didn’t make The Owls’ first team and he returned to non league football with Kilnhurst Town in 1913 before joining Southern League Northampton Town in the summer of 1914. His spell at The County Ground was of course badly affected by the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War in May 1915.
On resumption of peacetime football he joined Second Division Grimsby Town in August 1919, making his Football League debut for them the same month against Stockport County. A regular for them during their 1919-20 campaign that ended in relegation, he played 49 matches for The Mariners over the next two seasons before re-joining Denaby United in the 1921 close season.
