Barrowford, Lancashire born left back Arthur Dixon began his football career with Trawden Forest and joined Lancashire League club Nelson on amateur terms in 1899 before signing professional forms with Second Division club Burnley in June 1900, making his Football League debut against Doncaster Rovers in December 1901, playing at left half, where he played regularly for The Clarets until October 1903, when he switched to (predominantly) left back. Dixon missed only one match in each of Burnley’s 1903-04 and 1904-05 campaigns, and was a regular until his transfer to Southern League club Tottenham Hotspur for £350 in May 1907 after 8 goals in 183 appearances for Burnley.
Dixon made his Spurs debut that September against Queen’s Park Rangers but made only 6 League appearances in a single season at White Hart Lane before returning to Football League action, signing for Bradford Park Avenue in June 1908. A regular during his first two seasons at Park Avenue and an ever present in Bradford’s 1910-11 campaign, he lost his place in October 1911 and was only an occasional performer before his return to Nelson in the 1913 close season after scoring twice in 120 appearances for Bradford. Already in his mid 30’s, Nelson was his final club before his retirement with the onset of the First World War.
