Lochmaben, Dumfrieshire born outside right Angus Douglas began his football career with Castlemilk, and played for Lochmaben Rangers and Dumfries, from where he was loaned to both Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers in 1906. He was signed by First Division club Chelsea in May 1908, making his Football League debut against Preston North End that September, and although used sparingly in his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge, the latter of which ended in relegation, making just over 20 appearances, he was a regular in Chelsea’s line up from December 1910, helping them to finish third and then to win promotion as Second Division runners up in 1911-12. In recognition of his form he won a single cap for Scotland, when he played in their 2-0 win over Ireland at Celtic Park, Glasgow in March 1912.
Tricky and fast on the ball, Douglas was a great favourite at Stamford Bridge but in the top flight he lost his place in the Chelsea first team after Christmas 1912 and played only once more before being signed by Newcastle United for £1,100 in October 1913, after 12 goals in 103 appearances for The Pensioners. He was a regular in The Toon’s first team until the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, by when he had scored twice in 56 appearances for Newcastle United. Douglas worked in the munitions industry during the First World War and died of Spanish flu aged 29 in December 1918, one month after the Armistice.
