Description

Whitletts, Ayr born inside forward Tom Douglas began his football career with Kilwinning Rangers in 1926 and joined Scottish League Motherwell in 1927, where he netted 4 goals in just 7 League appearances for The ‘Well over four seasons before joining First Division Blackpool in November 1931. He immediately made his Football League debut at Aston Villa, and scored 10 goals in his debut season, finishing as the club’s second top goalscorer to Jimmy Hampson. However his 8 goals in 1932-33 were not enough to save Blackpool from relegation, and he joined Burnley in September 1933 having scored 18 goals in 65 appearances for The Seasiders.

A regular in his first season at Burnley, he lost his place in November 1934 and appeared only occasionally for The Clarets thereafter, before joining non league Witton Albion in 1936 after 13 goals in 65 appearances. He returned to Football League action in June 1938 with Rochdale, making 8 appearances during the first half of the 1938-39 season for ‘Dale. The outbreak of the Second World War saw Douglas serve in the Armed Forces, and he was sadly killed in action in the Middle East in March 1943, aged only 32.
