Dundee born right back John Dow began his football career with Dundee Our Boys in 1891 before joining Scottish League club Dundee in 1892, from where he was signed by First Division Newton Heath (now Manchester United) in February 1894, making his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers the next month. He played 49 games, scoring 6 goals for The Heathens, 5 of which came in 1894-95 as Dow deputised at centre forward in the first half of the season, before leaving Bank Street to join Lancashire League Fairfield in 1896, and he signed for Midland League club Glossop North End in 1897.
He returned to Football League action with Second Division Luton Town in September 1898, scoring 4 goals in 65 appearances at Kenilworth Road, and being ever present for The Hatters in 1899-1900, before joining Middlesbrough in May 1900. He played 41 times for ‘Boro over his two seasons there before joining Southern League West Ham United, making 14 appearances for The Hammers during 1902-03 before re-joining (by now Southern League) Luton Town, where he spent the rest of his career before his eventual retirement.
